The term big bang first appeared in print in early April 1949 in the BBC magazine The Listener, which reproduced the transcript of Fred Hoyle’s talk. The name of the theory caught the public imagination and has been used ever since. The big bang is a contradictory event with a changing image, as its representation varies according to advances in science. Although the scientific imagery evolves, it is expected to resist abstraction. So the title figures next to a picture; the adjoining text retains the scientific context.
